Anyanso Mma, the owner of TheMap, a private investment company, has responded to FIJ’s inquiries for the first time with a threat.
Mma’s threat was a response to a message FIJ sent to him in November.
FIJ first reported about how Mma left investors stranded in 2021. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) later arrested Mma but released him without any explanation.
Before publishing the 2021 report, FIJ reached out to TheMap via calls and a text message. They did not respond.
Before publishing its story in November, FIJ reached out to Mma on November 12 to get him to respond to the accusations made against him. However, he did not respond.

On Monday, 41 days later, Mma responded.
“You can go ahead and publish whatever you feel like. Freedom of speech, but you shall hear from me. Thank you once again,” Mma threatened.
“You didn’t reach out to me, you didn’t reach out to my lawyer. You did not reach out to our PR officer and many other channels you could have used to reach out to me earlier.
“Show me. Prove it, any attempt made to reach me.
“Never mind. Go ahead. Go (do) your publication, as I owe you zero explanation. But you guys must hear from me.”

“You think I am out here for jokes. A stupid Foundation for Investigative Journalism that could not carry out one single investigation. Yet you damaged my name,” Mma added.
“Go ahead and publish anything you wish. Like I stated I owe you and your stupid organisation And very useless organisation no explanation. Stupid idiots, starting from you.”
In November, FIJ reported how Janet Balogun (pseudonym), a retired widow, and her daughter invested N5.6 million and N500,000 respectively, but Mma failed to return their benefits.
When FIJ contacted the EFCC to know what they discovered about Mma and why he was released, they claimed not to know about the case.
