A disturbing two-minute video of Stella Nwadigo, a teacher repeatedly hitting a three-year-old pupil of Christ-Mitots School, Isawo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos, for not quickly grasping her number writing instructions emerged on Wednesday.

In the video, the teacher hit the toddler (who FIJ will not name for child protection reasons) five times as she took him through his number lessons counting in the 60s.

The teacher asked the child to write 61 and 62.

“It is like this. Write,” she said and then hit him.

“Write six for me. Write. Six. Six,” she continued.

“Like this, six like this. Like this. Now your one. Six. One. Sixty-one. Write.”

She then hit him again.

“Six, it is like this. Like this.”

Another slap.

“Your two… Six. Two. Sixty-two. Write. Like this… Like this, that is six.”

The actions of the teacher violate the Nigerian Child Act which demands that every child should be treated with dignity.

“Every child is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly, no child shall be‐ (a) subjected to physical, mental or emotional injury, abuse, neglect or maltreatment, including sexual abuse; (b) subjected to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” some parts of the act reads.
