More than a year after an auto crash almost took her life, Kemisola Afolabi (not real name), an Ekiti State schoolgirl, is ready to return to school but for an open bone in the knee area of her amputated leg.

The Ekiti State Government had financially intervened in her situation after several EQToday reports, and she got some treatment and a manually built prothesis. Now, she is out of the hospital, but she still can’t walk freely.

Her main challenge is using the acquired prothesis to walk without feeling any pain. Her left leg still hurts because the final surgical procedure has not been done to make her knee heal up.

Explaining her condition to EQToday, Kemisola said, “I can’t use the artificial leg to walk comfortably without feeling a sharp pain in my bone. The tip of the limb is bonny and has refused to heal up.”

Adewale Olailo, the girl’s father, told EQToday that the family is helpless and does not know how to make the pain go away so the girl can achieve her educational aspirations.

BACKSTORY

Afolabi was returning home after school on November 18, 2022, when she was knocked down by a speeding vehicle. From the scene of the crash, she was taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FTHI).

EQToday repeatedly reported her experience at the hospital. From the management abandoning her in the ward for speaking to the media to an internal conspiracy intended to relieve the driver who hit her of the responsibility of paying her hospital bill, the secondary schoolgirl suffered a bad fate while struggling to regain her health and mobility.

The state government intervened in March 2023 with a letter addressed to the FTHI, taking responsibility for the schoolgirl’s treatment and procurement of an artificial limb.

Unhappy about EQToday’s continuous reports on the mishandling of Afolabi’s case, the hospital ensured the return of the money paid by the government. The hospital also discharged her without carrying out the final surgery to cover a bonny tip.

After she was referred to a state-owned facility, the student of Notre Dame Grammar School, Usi-Ekiti, only got a prosthesis built for her. The final surgery was still not done.

Now trying to pick up the pieces of her life, she enrolled in another school recently. But the open bone in her knee has made walking a major challenge.

The prosthesis builder has told the family that unless a final surgery is performed on her leg to cover the bonny tip, she will not be able to use her legs properly.
