United Bank for Africa (UBA) has refunded N632,000 to Funsho Elemo (not real name), an Edo tiler, who mistakenly transferred the money to the wrong bank account in September.
The refund came two days after FIJ reported how the tiler had gone to different UBA branches in Benin City to ask for a reversal.
The tiler, who preferred not to share his name, said the money belonged to his mother, who had saved it with him to run her business.

He told FIJ that despite obtaining a court order as directed by UBA, the bank failed to prevent the recipient from withdrawing his money.

“God will bless you guys so much,” he told FIJ on Thursday.
“Since the day you published the article, they have been calling me.”
He had earlier told FIJ that a UBA staff in one of the branches he visited for help had told him to pay N10,000 for a lawyer to verify the court order he obtained for the reversal.
The same staff would later inform him that the lien she placed on the recipient’s account had been removed from the bank’s headquarters, allowing the recipient to withdraw the money.
He also said that despite all efforts to salvage the situation for his mother’s business, they were watered down by UBA’s failure to rectify the anomaly until FIJ told his story.
