The National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), a bureaucratic body managing staff and administrative affairs of the National Assembly, has continued to engage in secret recruitments.

Sometime in 2015, the NASC quickly disclaimed the recruitment adverts some blogs circulated. Since then, it has not announced any job vacancies open to fair public participation.

Against that disclaimer, evidence has come to light that NASC secretly employed individuals with connections to prominent people, particularly politicians.

On Tuesday, Sagir Ibrahim Koki, the elected lawmaker from the Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, announced the success of a “pensionable [job] offer” he facilitated for Aliyu Hashim, a man from his constituency, at the NASC.

Koki represents his constituency under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Koki’s X post. L-R: Koki and Hashim.

“Earlier today, I had the pleasure of receiving Mr Aliyu Hashim, one of my constituents whom we assisted in securing a permanent, pensionable offer with the National Assembly Service Commission,” Koki wrote on X.

FIJ’s attempts to find out if the NASC was recruiting was unsuccessful at press time as James Paul Omori whose phone number was copied from the NASC’s website said he could not speak with the media. He then directed FIJ to the information unit for a response.

Omori promised to send the information officer’s phone number but he had not done so at publication time.

Curiously, the commission described itself as a responsible organisation which publishes “vacancies in at least three national newspapers and calls for applications from interested qualified candidates”, according to its 2015 disclaimer published here and here.

FIJ had similarly reported how the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) employed some individuals through Dominic Dickson Tarkighir, a member of the House of Representatives of the Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress. This occurred a day after the aviation regulator denied claims it was carrying out a recruitment exercise.

How federal agencies continue to sidestep recruitment laws has been well documented. The Nation reported in 2023 how many agencies were secretly selling employment opportunities and dispensing undue favours to high-profile individuals.

Due to dishonest practices and the lack of transparency, many desperate employment seekers often fall victim to conmen who parade themselves as government employment agents and get ripped off of their money.
