Many Nigerian social media users are indifferent about the arrest of a suspected vote-buyer by the Department of State Services (DSS) in the ongoing Ondo State governorship election.

A circulating video sighted by FIJ shows that the DSS officers found a cutlass and two bags suspected to be full of cash in the booth of a car driven by an unnamed man on Saturday morning. There are speculations that the money was for vote-buying in the election.

According to Channels TV, the man was arrested around 9:00 am at Ward 4, Polling Unit 007 outside St. Stephen’s Primary School, Akure.

While reacting to the video, many users expressed doubts about the potential of the arrest to positively change the outcome of the election.

Also, due to the perception that elections in Nigeria are rife with malpractises, many opined that the arrest would achieve nothing.

An X user @nohrix wrote: “As usual. Same script, same approach, same outcome.”

Another user, @uchenduchris01, said: “Nothing will still happen. Detain him today, release him tomorrow. Next four years it happens again.”

@AustinINstate added: “This is where the matter would end up with. Would you hear the person that sent him? No!! So it’s all noisemaking without any effect.”

Elsewhere, @dr_fayinka asked: “All this drama for what exactly? What happened to all those EFCC arrested in Edo?”

Then @PaulJnr said: “They will soon share that money for themselves now”, while @Churchboy2245 noted: “Nothing will happen. This batch of officers don cash out for the day.”

Then there are X users like @ernest29463821 who feel the video is a “movie, another film”, and @honoflife who said “this thing looks like film”; @EneRhema labelled it “drama”, while @IgidiSolomon believes it was “staged”.

One users, @FavNaijaGuy, wondered: “Does this man look like the originator? They will still bail him out later. Let him provide the ones who sent him and let those people be publicised.”
