The Lagos State Government has asked that the Supreme Court overturn the acquittal of Femi Olaleye, a medical doctor who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Court of Appeal in Lagos for sexually abusing his wife’s niece in 2023.
The Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed that the state government filed an appeal at the apex court on Saturday stating that they intend to challenge the Appeal Court’s decision to restore public trust in the justice system.
In November 2022, the doctor who headed Optimal Cancer Care Foundation was accused of raping his wife’s 16-year-old niece between March 2020 to November 2021. He was also said to have introduced the child to pornography and oral sex.

He was prosecuted by the Lagos Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court in October 2023 and sentenced to a lifetime in jail.
However, one year after that sentence, the Court of Appeal dismissed the judgment stating there were errors in it. The court also stated that the evidence provided against the medical doctor was “tainted” and “unreliable”.
