Kidnappers have demanded a N250 million ransom for Maharazu Tsiga, a former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who was taken on Wednesday.

The gunmen abducted Tsiga, a retired army general, on Wednesday after surrounding his Katsina residence in the middle of the night. Tsiga was kidnapped alongside nine other residents.

When FIJ called DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the Katsina police spokesperson, on Saturday, he said the command was aware of the incident and had launched a manhunt to secure his release.

“We are aware and we are on top of the situation. Currently, in collaboration with all security agencies, we are on a manhunt and charge and rescue operation, with the hope of rescuing the kidnapped victim and arresting the perpetrators,” said Aliyu.

This development follows another group of kidnappers’ N40 million ransom demand to free Bashir Abara Gummi, a state coordinator with the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

FIJ reported that Gummi was abducted in October along with other travellers while on his way for official duty in Abuja.

The relatives of the RMAFC official had initially paid a N16 million ransom to the abductors, but they refused to release him after collecting the money. Instead, they demanded an additional N40 million on Monday.

In a video clip seen by FIJ, the kidnappers filmed Gummi while calling his family. They said he would be released if the new ransom demand was met.
