Retired Major General Maharazu Tsiga, a former director general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been abducted by gunmen.

Tsiga was abducted alongside several residents of Tsiga Village, a settlement in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, around midnight on Wednesday.

During the attack, two residents were wounded while one of the gunmen lost his life when fellow attackers mistakenly shot him.

Abubakar Sadiq, the police spokesperson for the state, declined to comment on the attack.

Tsiga served as NYSC’s 14th Director General between 2009 and 2011.

In 2018, while Kemi Adeosun, a former Minister of Finance, was accused of presenting a fake NYSC exemption certificate as part of the requirements for her appointment, Tsiga granted an interview to state that the document could not have been issued by the post-tertiary scheme.

“We have what is called (a) strong room. I believe from there they can easily identify if a certificate is issued by the NYSC or not,” Tsiga said at the time.

“Inasmuch as you have not served, no matter how old you grow, in as much as you were not mobilised to serve at the time you were supposed to serve, they can never give you exemption. You must go for service.”

Tsiga also said there was no way Yusuf Bomoi, his predecessor, could have signed the certificate Adeosun presented because it was issued in September 2009, nine months after he had taken over as DG.

Adeosun had presented the fake certificate in 2015. She would later admit that it was a forged copy the same year and subsequently resigned from her position as minister on September 14, 2018.
