The national grid suffered a major setback on Saturday, leaving many Nigerians without power, FIJ can report.
This setback is coming on the heels on two recent collapses in the space of one week. On Tuesday, the grid failed twice within 24 hours, marking the seventh collapse in 2024.
As of press time, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not provided an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse.
But data from the Nigerian System Operator’s dashboard (niggrid.org) shows that all 11 distribution companies had a load allocation of 0.00MW as of 9:34 a.m. on Saturday.
Ikeja Electric, the distribution company serving Lagos State capital, confirmed the outage in a public statement issued on Saturday. According to the DisCo, power supply was interrupted around 8:15 a.m.
“Kindly be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 19/10/24, at 08:15 hours, affecting power supply across our networt. Efforts are ongoing, with stakeholders working to restore electricity to all affected areas.”
Meanwhile, on Friday, Nigeria recorded a peak power generation of 4,807.20 MW at a 50 hertz frequency, according to the country’s power data portal.
