The court hearing on the bullying of Amos Akinbiyi, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, will commence on January 31.
This was made known to FIJ by the Nigerian gynaecologist in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.
“The submission of evidence and court hearing will begin on January 31,” said Akinbiyi.
“I filed the suit since the Regina General Hospital bullying incident happened in 2023. Apart from this suit, I have also filed a separate one for forgery against the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA). Hearing on the forgery case is also expected to commence soon.”

In December 2023, FIJ reported how the hospital’s management forced Akinbiyi to resuscitate his daughter who had suffered a cardiac arrest twice.
The incident happened in September 2017. After he managed to revive his daughter, he verbally registered his displeasure with the hospital, stating that he should not have been forced to treat his own daughter when any other doctor could have been assigned to her.

Rather than get a formal apology from the hospital, however, Akinbiyi was subjected to several acts of harassment and intimidation that included claims that he had mismanaged several patients’ cases in his 40 years of working at the hospital.
He was later suspended from practising at the hospital. This led him to sue the hospital’s management.
The main defendants in the case are the Regina General Hospital and the SHA, the health authority that provides direct and contracted health services in the region.
