Olawale Akintola, a South Africa-based Nigerian businessman, has narrated how Ecobank has been foot-dragging about recovering a N1.8 million sum he erroneously transferred to a wrong account number.
Akintola told FIJ he made the erroneous transfer to an account belonging to one of Ecobank’s customers on July 2.
“On July 2, I intended transferring N1.8 million naira from Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account number to another GTB account number belonging to a business associate,” Akintola told FIJ on Thursday afternoon.
“Instead, I erroneously made the transfer to an Ecobank account. The moment I realised I had made a mistake, I immediately contacted GTB, my bank, for help, and was told Ecobank could help in recovering and reversing the sum to my account.

The Court Order Akintola Obtained
“For this to happen, however, I was told I would have to submit a court order that would then be forwarded to Ecobank.”
Akintola told FIJ that he obtained the court order during the period and submitted it to GTB as advised.
“GTB confirmed to me that the same court order had been forwarded to Ecobank the same period I submitted it,” said Akintola.
“Till we speak, however, no single update has been received from Ecobank on the matter since July.”

FIJ sent an email to Ecobank’s help desk for a reaction to Akintola’s complaint on Friday morning, but it had not been responded to at press time on Saturday.
A similar email was also sent to GTB’s customer care unit, requesting to know if it was helping its customer on the issue by sending reminders to Ecobank. Just like Ecobank, GTB had also not issued any response to the email.
